This year, the Revolutionary Mile introduces a brand‑new way to experience Trenton’s history: the Gamified Historic Footsteps smartphone app. Designed for teams, families, students, and curious explorers, this GPS‑based game transforms 30 federally registered historic sites into interactive learning moments along the 1.55‑mile course.

One of the most exciting surprises from our inaugural season was just how many participants wanted to walk the route and dive into Trenton’s history. More than half of all registrants chose Historic Footsteps  discovering downtown’s extraordinary concentration of nationally recognized historic sites. Trenton, the most historic small city in America, has more than 200 federally registered locations, and many of the most iconic are right on or near the Revolutionary Mile.

This year, the experience gets even better.

A Smarter, Seamless Way to Explore

After seeing how paper‑heavy the first year’s process was, we partnered with Vibemap to build a cleaner, faster, and more intuitive platform. Their solution: a GPS‑activated smartphone app that makes participation effortless.

As you move through downtown, your phone automatically unlocks questions at each umbrella‑identified landmark — no scanning, no searching, no hassle. Just walk, tap, and play.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

Historic Footsteps brings Trenton’s Revolutionary‑era and cultural landmarks to life, including:

  • The site of the Declaration of Independence reading, where Trenton residents first heard the words that reshaped the world.
  • The Hunterdon County Courthouse, a cornerstone of early civic life and a witness to the city’s political evolution.
  • Taylor Opera House, once one of America’s premier performance venues and a symbol of Trenton’s cultural prominence.
  • The William Trent House, the 1719 home of the city’s founder and one of New Jersey’s most important colonial sites.
  • The Old Barracks, where soldiers slept, strategized, and prepared for the battles that defined the Revolution.
  • The site of the first professional basketball game, where you can even take a commemorative jump shot to mark the moment.

Each stop blends quick, engaging questions with real‑time discovery, turning downtown Trenton into a living, playful museum.

How the Challenge Works

Historic Footsteps teams are measured on two matrices:

  • Average team time
  • Accuracy of answers

All team members must cross the finish line within 45 minutes — a comfortable 30‑minute‑per‑mile pace keeps you in the game.

Why Participants Love It
  • GPS‑triggered prompts activate automatically at each landmark
  • Fun, fluid questions bring Revolutionary‑era stories to life
  • Team‑based play keeps the energy high and the competition friendly
  • A seamless interface ensures anyone can join with ease

Historic Footsteps turns Trenton’s most important sites into an interactive adventure — inviting you to learn, laugh, and explore as you move through the city’s past and present.
