On a warm afternoon in Trenton, the city feels like it’s leaning forward, toward possibility, toward momentum, toward something new. That sense of anticipation has only grown with the arrival of the Ironhawks, the region’s newest minor league hockey team and a franchise already stirring excitement across Mercer and Bucks Counties.
“The arrival of a new minor league hockey team adds energy, opportunity, and a fresh sense of possibility,” I say as I sit down with the team’s President and Founder of the Ironhawks, Bob Ohrlabo, he nods, ready to tell the story behind the Ironhawks, a story rooted in community, character, and a belief that hockey can help shape the next chapter of Trenton.
When asked what he imagined at the very beginning, his answer comes with conviction. “Trenton and the surrounding areas already have a rich culture of loving hockey,” he explains. “By bringing in a quality, hardworking team of professional players who are just steps from the NHL, we want to increase interest in the sport, especially among area youth.”
For him, the Ironhawks aren’t just a team; they’re a catalyst. Coaches and players will work with existing programs, showing kids what’s possible and giving them role models who reflect the grit and determination of the region.
Every team needs a story, something fans can feel. When asked what values he hopes define the Ironhawks five years from now, he doesn’t hesitate. “Quality family entertainment at affordable prices,” he says. “Being active in making our community a better place, especially for kids. And delivering on all our promises to partners, sponsors, fans, and players.” It’s a vision that blends sports with civic responsibility, a theme that runs through every part of his plan.
Trenton sits between two major sports markets, New York and Philadelphia, where loyalties run deep and often divide households. The Ironhawks founder sees that as an opportunity.
“Pro sports teams are uniters,” he says. “Whether you’re a Flyers fan, a Devils fan, a Phillies fan or a Yankees fan, you can cheer on teams representing your city. And at prices families can actually afford.” In his view, the Ironhawks and the Thunder together create a shared identity, one rooted not in distant cities, but in Trenton itself.
When asked what success looks like beyond wins and losses, he points to the relationships already forming.“We didn’t come in with pre‑conceived plans,” he says. “We’ve been learning the communities we serve and identifying their needs.” That learning has already led to partnerships with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Trenton, outreach to schools, youth hockey collaborations, and upcoming ball hockey programs.“We’re engaged in many areas, all with the goal of driving people into downtown Trenton to cheer on their team.”
Sports teams don’t just fill seats, they fill restaurants, hotels, and sidewalks. He lays out the numbers plainly. “If we average 5,000 fans a game, that’s more than 200,000 people downtown through fall, winter, and spring, even more when we make the playoffs.” A thriving Ironhawks franchise also strengthens the CURE Insurance Arena, making it more attractive to promoters and boosting concerts and events. “Those people generate dollars everywhere, dinner before the game, hotel rooms, player expenditures. It all adds up.”
The Ironhawks aren’t arriving in isolation. They’re joining a growing sports ecosystem anchored by the Thunder and the CURE Arena. “We’ve forged a great relationship with the Thunder and begun cross‑promotions,” he says. “We’ll drive more business to the arena and raise the profile of the area when we travel. We’ll push the Trenton brand through the U.S. and Canada.”
Ask him about game night, and his eyes light up. “We want fans to have no idea what to expect when they enter the arena,” he says. “This is about pro hockey and so much more, music, video, intermission activities, pre‑game and post‑game events, theme nights, a creative promotional schedule.” It’s entertainment with a heartbeat, one that reflects the city’s energy.
The Ironhawks plan to be everywhere; in schools, businesses, community events, and watch parties. “Our players will be out in the community,” he says. “We’ll extend our brand into every opportunity that presents itself.” The goal is simple: make the Ironhawks part of daily life.
When assembling the inaugural roster, he’s looking close to home. “There are many impact players in the ECHL who hail from New Jersey,” he says. “We’re excited that many have expressed interest. Our goal is to build a hardworking team with these New Jersey natives playing a major part.”
The Ironhawks name pays homage to ironworkers and skilled laborers, the people who built the region. “We’re building a team that works hard every night and is proud to be an Ironhawk,” he says. “Character is just as important as skill.” With Coach Chuck Weber, a championship‑winning leader of young NHL prospects; the team is aiming high. “Our ultimate goal is to bring the Kelly Cup back to Trenton and sustain that success for many years.”
Success in Year 1? “A competitive team that draws 5,000 plus fans a game and is very involved in the community.”
Success in Year 5?“Bringing the Kelly Cup back to Trenton.”
He’s already thinking about youth hockey. “Many more kids will want to play after coming to an Ironhawks game,” he says. “We want to work with existing facilities to give them a place to play.”
His past teams in Jacksonville and Savannah built or renovated rinks and grew youth hockey dramatically. “We also want to expose the sport to kids who can’t afford to play or watch it,” he adds. “We’re working with 43 Oak, which partners with the Islanders to help kids learn to skate and play.”
When asked how he hopes the Ironhawks will be remembered, his answer is clear. “As a catalyst for growth in downtown,” he says. “We want to work with Dan Benson, political and business leaders, and community leaders to make downtown Trenton alive and vibrant.”
The Ironhawks represent more than a team, they represent possibility. They represent pride. They represent a new era for Trenton. And as fans across the region look ahead to opening night, one thing is certain: this franchise is ready to take flight, thanks to a collaborative vision and a driven Founder.
